Use the following website to answer the following questions.  (Use the various lessons to find the information.)

www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/waves/U10L1a.html

1.What is the difference between a transverse and longitudinal wave.

2. What do all waves carry?

3. What kind of medium do transverse waves require?

4. Where are the crests of a wave? The Troughs?

5. The Amplitude of a wave is measured from where?

6. What does amplitude have to do with sound?

7.Explain the difference between a rarefaction and a compression?

8. What is the formula for the speed of a wave?

9. What is the speed of sound?

10. If an echo is heard one second after the holler and reflects off canyon walls which are a distance of 170

meters away, then what is the speed of the wave?

11. Look in Lesson 3 and explain what is happening to the light waves as they travel through the glass bottom.

12. What is refraction?

13. Using Lesson 4,  Describe what occurs in a standing wave.

14. What occurs when waves interfere with one another?

15. Explain the difference between a node and an antinode.  Use a definition or what the animation and describe.

16. what is meant by the 1st harmonic?

17. Explain the process of hearing on the eardrum.

18. Look in another section on waves and write 3 possible questions on waves.

  1. What is the fundamental natural frequency of a wave?
    20.  Go to the worksheet section and do the 3 wave set problems.
    21. answer 2 of the 4 questions at the bottom of the mainpage.
    22.  Go to the physlet and attempt to get the standing wave to move to the 2nd harmonic.
    23. Go to the tranverse traveling wave and vary the amplitude and then the frequency.  How does changing these affect the speed of the wave?
    24.  Continue on Physlet section and click on the longitudinal wave.  Vary the amplitude and then the frequency.  How does changing these affect the speed of the wave?
    25.  Explain lenses effect due to ripples.

26. Where does the 1st bending mode of a bat take place?  SO>>> how fast is the bat actually moving?

27. What is the sweet spot of the bat?

28. What is the difference between a wood and an aluminum bat?

29.  The physics and acoustics of bats sections shows some good pictures of what happens when the ball and the bat meet.  Describe the differences between a baseball and a softball hitting bat.
