Machines Portfolio for Physical Science 2007

This is a review for the machines test on Wednesday.  Review machines packet and review the book pages (honors)Holt 284-284-296 and CPO pages 65-77.

 

Answer the following Questions in a Powerpoint presentation.  You must have a minimum of 15 slides.  When you print out you presentation make sure you print 6 slides per page-(handout format).

 

 

  1. Give a definition and show a graphic of all the simple machines.
  2. Define Simple Machine and tell what they are most commonly used for in life.
  3. Show each type of lever and explain where the fulcrum, resistance and effort are located in each.
  4. Show a graphic and fully explain the differences in a fixed and moveable pulley.
  5. Why do screws have different types and distances between the threads?
  6. What is mechanical advantage and why is it important in a machine?  List the mechanical advantage formula and give a problem for 3 different simple machines.
  7.  A refrigerator weighs 2200N.    It is pushed up a 10 meter ramp with a force of 800N.  What is the Mechanical Advantage of the ramp?
  8. A.  A worker applies a force of 50N to pry open a window that has resistance of 800N.  What is the Mechanical Advantage?

B What is the Force output of a simple machine that has a MA of 8 and has a Force input of 14?

 

  1. Knowing that IMA of an inclined plane is length / height  ,  what is the MA of a machine that has a 

       length of 120 meters and a height of 100 meters?

  1. How much power is used if a force of 35 Newtons is used to push a box a distance of 10 meters in 10 seconds?  Show work on the slide.
  2. Explain what a Rube Goldberg device is and explain how you would develop one in your own house or room.
  3.  IF the work put in to a machine is  1600J and the workout of a machine is  1475J what is the overall efficiency of the machine?  Show all work!
  4. Explain and show a graphic how the mechanical advantage can vary in  2 different pulley systems.
  5. Find an educational website and list 3 questions regarding the website.  (This must be an age appropriate site.)  Make sure list the website and the question you write about the site.
  6. What is the Power of an object that has a mass of 12 kg and is moved 14m in a total of 43 seconds?

A machine that uses 210watts of power moves an object a distance of 15 meters  in 37 seconds.  Find the force needed and the work done by this machine.

A 2700N box is moved up a ramp that is 8m long with a force of 2450 N to a height of 6 meters. What are the following:
